Trains grind to halt after man hit on tracks

THOUSANDS of commuters faced hours of delays when rail lines in and out of Birmingham were paralysed when a man died after being struck by a train.

The incident at 3.40am today left the rail network at a standstill as all trains between Birmingham and Coventry were cancelled.

The man was struck by an EWS freight train near to Coventry Station and the tracks were closed until 7.30am as British Transport Police carried out investigations.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Police were on the scene carrying out investigations on behalf of the coroner.

"The identity of the man is not being released at this time."

The spokesman had no further information about the condition of the man.

A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed that commuters could still face significant delays due to the incident.

He said: "Services have just begun operating again as it was affecting all services out of Coventry.

"It will take quite a while for normal services to resume."

British Transport Police requested that anyone with information should call them on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
