We have it licked!

KIND-hearted Birmingham Mail readers are answering the call for more lollipop men and women.

More than 130 crossings lie vacant in the region every day, leaving children as young as five to negotiate city rush hour traffic, a Birmingham Mail investigation showed.

But as part of the Birmingham Mail Keep Our Kids Safe campaign, readers have already started to contact Birmingham City Council to apply for the jobs.

The first wave of people wanting to play their part in making the city safer have been in touch with highways bosses.

More than 400 lollipop men and women patrol busy roads outside Birmingham schools every day but still 50 crossings in the city lie unstaffed.

In 2007 a total of 326 children were knocked down by cars as they tried to cross the road. Of those, 64 needed emergency hospital treatment.

Now council recruitment bosses say they expect more readers to come forward and join the army of lollipop men and women who are saving children's lives every day.

So make the call now. Save a life today.
