Ceremony in Birmingham to remember lost babies

POIGNANT readings and poetry will keep the memory of lost babies alive at a special ceremony for grieving Midland parents.

People whose babies died in the womb or shortly after birth will gather for the Still In Our Hearts non-religious service in Birmingham.

Birmingham Women's Hospital bosses, who organise the event every year, urged anyone who is grieving for a young life to come along to the Midland Arts Centre at Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston.

Midwife Ruth Kirchmeier said: "This is the fourth time we will have held this Still in Our Hearts ceremony and we would like to extend a very warm welcome to any of our bereaved parents, their families and friends.

"We do hold a church-based ceremony in the autumn but we thought it was important to have a memorial service for people of any faiths or no faith in a secular environment."

Ruth added: "It can be difficult for women and their partners to talk about the loss of their baby.

"It can be a sad and lonely time and women may have feelings that can be hard to express. The service allows women, their partners and their families to meet and talk with other people who have been through a similar traumatic experience."

Families from different communities, cultures and religions are set to meet to remember, listen to each other and say things that it is often hard to say.

The ceremony takes place at 11am on Sunday, March 16, in the Parkside Room, Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston.
