Swimmers enjoy a slice of the action at Moseley baths

YOUNGSTERS made a splash for one of the city's most historic baths to honour its centenary.

The Friends of Moseley Baths put on a special children's party with free swimming sessions and birthday cake for the threatened pool in Balsall Heath.

Members came up with the idea of getting youngsters to join in celebrations for the pools' centenary year over the weekend.

The Edwardian Grade II listed building officially opened its doors in October 1907 when visitors could use the private washing baths, but it was not until March 1908 when Brummies had the first opportunity to dive in to its two swimming pools.

Chairman of the Friend's Group Russ Spring said: "We called the event at the weekend Kids, Costumes and Cakes so we can thank children who use the baths regularly and encourage others to enjoy its delights."

Campaigners are still fighting to get the baths renovated to its former glory.

The future of the baths is torn in a battle between campaigners and Birmingham City Council leisure chiefs, who are looking at building brand new sport facilities rather than spend millions of pounds patching up decaying buildings.

Costs to fully renovate Moseley Road Baths are estimated to be as high as £30 million.
