Muslims take to the streets

Worshippers march along Golden Hillock Road

HUNDREDS of Muslims took to Birmingham's streets for a parade celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed.

Worshippers from city mosques gathered at Small Heath for a 90-minute tour of streets to begin the festival of Eid Milad un Nabi.

Prayers were read during the parade before worshippers gathered at the Ghamkol Sharif at Golden Hillock Road, Small Heath.

The festival is one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar.

Parades were mirrored in cities across the world and will be repeated in Birmingham next weekend.

West Midlands Confederation of Sunni Mosques secretary, Moulana Bostan al Qadri, said: "The whole of Birmingham's Muslim community will be celebrating.

"Generally it is celebrated for the next month.

"There will be a lot of smaller celebrations for young children in family homes and big gatherings at mosques.

"It is a time when the community comes together to celebrate with each other."
