Girl hurt as home blazes

A TEENAGE girl was taken to hospital following a blaze at Birmingham flats.

The 16-year-old girl was overcome by smoke after fire broke out at 11-storey Windsor House, in Jarvis Road, Erdington, at 1pm yesterday.

She was treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to Good Hope Hospital, in Sutton Coldfield, suffering from smoke inhalation.

Thirty firefighters from stations across Birmingham were sent to the scene after the blaze began in the kitchen of a seventh-floor flat.

A number of firemen wore breathing apparatus due to the thick smoke.

A spokesman for Erdington fire station said: "Neither of the two occupants was inside the flat when we arrived but the daughter was suffering from the effects of smoke.

"She was treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to hospital.

"Two other people in neighbouring flats were led to safety and we cleared smoke from floors above the affected flat."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
