Booked in early!

AT just a few days old, this little bundle has become Sandwell's youngest library member.

Tiny Ridley Breadon was signed up by mum Alison on her first trip out of the house after leaving hospital.

Alison, of Oldbury, said: "After being discharged I spent a few days at home before deciding to go to the library because it is only five minutes down the road and I had to take some books back.

"I thought it would be a good time to get a membership card for Ridley. My husband John and I both think libraries are wonderful places and want him to grow up with a love of books."

A Sandwell library member for three years, Alison borrowed several books for Ridley, including My Mummy, which she read to him on Mother's Day.

Now she is considering taking advantage of Sandwell's toy library for Ridley, born weighing 7lbs 10ozs.

Ridley joined the library service during a campaign to boost membership ahead of the Year of Reading, a Government-backed initiative to celebrate reading in all its forms.

This includes a fines amnesty for overdue items and a competition with great prizes for every 10,000th item borrowed during the month, up to the 100,000th item.

Sandwell Council chief executive Alison Fraser, who recently did a stint behind the counter at Oldbury Library to promote the Year of Reading, said: "I wish Ridley and his mum and dad all the very best for the future.

"Our library service offers something for people of all ages, be it books, DVDs, CDs or toys."

* Joining a library only takes a few minutes at any branch or on-line at www.libraries.sandwell.gov.uk. It is free and open to everyone, even someone who doesn't live in the borough.
