TV's Stan to join the Mail Fun Run

Stany Collymore

VILLA hero Stan Collymore today added his name to the ranks of charity fundraisers taking part in the Birmingham Mail 5k Fun Run, helping us smash through the 1,000 runner mark.

Entries have flooded in for the 5km run on Sunday April 27, from Villa Park to the finish line inside Alexander Stadium, Perry Barr.

Collymore will join Blues co-owner Ralph Gold, Birmingham boxing champ Wayne Elcock, former Villa hero Bobby Thomson, TV presenter Sarah Falkland and Blues legends Dave Latchford and Joe Gallager to run in the event.

The 37-year-old former footballer from Staffordshire said he jumped at the chance to take part in the race, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and Birmingham Mail Charity Trust, as his own sister Andrea had died from cancer.

"I have been in training for the past six weeks towards this 5km run, but I don't expect to do it in a particularly fast time as I will be going round saying hello and having a chat to as many people as I can," said Collymore.

"Macmillan is a charity close to my heart as my eldest sister Andrea died from cancer 14 years ago when she was in her early 40s. I saw the effect the disease had on her and the devastation it caused my family.

"I want to get as many people as possible taking part in the Birmingham Mail Fun Run."

Families, work colleagues and regular runners are all set to take to the streets from 9am on the day.

Steve Dourass, Macmillan Cancer Support regional spokesman, said: "To reach 1,000 runners is a big milestone for the Fun Run and has exceeded our expectations.

"The more entries that come in is a bonus."

Anyone interested is urged to fill out the entry form shown and send it with the entrance fee to Macmillan Cancer Support.
