Arsonists start fire at youth centre

A QUANTITY of children's toys and Duke of Edinburgh Award equipment have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack on a youth centre in Birmingham.

The city council-run centre, known as The Square Club, in Castle Square, Weoley Castle, was targeted at about 8pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Woodgate Valley fire station said a wooden shed used to store the equipment and toys was set alight alongside the youth centre.

Flames then spread to the main building causing damage to window frames and smoke damage inside.

* A mobile phone shop in Birmingham was gutted today after flames tore through the building in the early hours.

Firefighters were alerted to Mobile Phone Communications, in Green Lane, Bordesley Green, at 4.20am when they were forced to evacuate families from nearby flats for safety.

No-one was injured in the fire and a team is now investigating.
