I've won a grand with The Birmingham Mail!

Tom McLoughlin-Yip with his wife Li and 14 month old son Ki-Yan from Bromford celebrate winning £1,000 with the Birmingham Mail.

IT was double celebration time for a city family as their proud son's first night as a scout was rounded off with a £1,000 win in the Birmingham Mail's Money Mania competition.

Mum Li McLoughlin-Yip, an intensive care nurse, was busy taking ten-year-old Gawin to his first meeting with the 115th Nansen Scout group and almost forgot her regular copy of the Birmingham Mail.

But, in the nick of time she remembered to call husband Tom and asked him to enter for her.

Tom, aged 42, said: "I'd just got in from work and Li asked me to get to the newsagent, get the paper and enter the competition. I'm glad I did.

"I could believe it when I got the call saying I'd won."

Li, aged 39, added: "I thought he was winding me up because I sent him out to get the Mail. It has been a memorable day for us."

The couple, who live in Bromford Road, have enjoyed a few memorable days in the last few years.

They hit the headlines in 2006 as their battle to overcome infertility succeeded with birth of Ki-Yan, now 14 months.

Li, who also has son Gawin from a previous relationship, suffers with lupus, while Tom has cystic-fibrosis so the chances were slim. Their story was featured in BBC1 documentary A Child Against the Odds.

Both work in the health service, Tom in Patient Public Involvement Division at Heartlands Hospital, encouraging the public to make better use of health services, and Li is an intensive care nurse at Birmingham's Children's Hospital.

Their surname McLoughlin-Yip reflects the family's joint heritage, Tom a born and bred Brummie of Irish descendents and Li, whose family come from Hong Kong.

Tom, a devoted Birmingham City fan, added: "I haven't thought about how to spend the money, I am sure Li has some ideas though."
