Cops' praise for Derby night fans

POLICE today praised football fans after the big Black Country derby between Wolves and West Bromwich Albion passed off without major incident.

Two arrests were made - one man, aged 41, on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and another on suspicion of trying to enter the Molineux stadium while drunk.

Both have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Police said "effective policing methods" were employed at last night's match, which Albion won 1-0 to go top of the table.

Officers added that the match passed without any major incidents and they thanked supporters of both clubs and local businesses for their co-operation and good behaviour.

Hundreds of extra police had been drafted in to keep the lid on the potentially-explosive match.

When the two teams had met previously there had been large-scale disorder but last night fans appeared to have heeded police warnings.

Many pubs in the area around the Molineux stadium decided to close their doors hours before kick-off.

Roads and key routes leading to and from the ground were also closed off to traffic and pedestrians as police brought in strict crowd control measures to keep rival fans apart.
