Driver was not a Blues fan - police

Floral tribute

SENIOR police chiefs today moved to quell unfounded rumours surrounding the death of "gentle giant" Christopher Priest.

Police chiefs quashed growing speculation by "categorically" denying that the driver allegedly involved in the incident was a Blues fan.

The move came as rumours surfaced on internet chat rooms and among fans over the club allegiances of people allegedly caught up in the tragedy following the Second City derby.

The 26-year-old Villa supporter, known to pals as Priestley, died following the collision with a VW Golf in Aston Hall Road, Aston, at 3pm on Sunday.

A 20-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

Two further men were arrested by Kent Police in the early hours of Monday, a 21-year-old from Birmingham also arrested on suspicion of murder and a 29-year-old Solihull man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All three have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

But as tributes to Chris poured in from both sets of supporters, rumours began to circulate claiming those involved were Blues fans.

The Mail was also contacted by people claiming to have the names of those involved.

Police today said the motive for the incident remained unclear but officers had previously said they did not believe it was as a result of football rivalries.

A force spokesman said: "I can tell you categorically that both the driver allegedly involved in the incident and the victim were Villa fans. Rumour and speculation does not help us get to the truth."

Witnesses can call police on 0845 113 5000 or the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
