Woman mown down by thief

A BIRMINGHAM woman suffered serious head injuries when she was being knocked down by a mugger's van.

Police are looking at the theory she could have been hit by the handbag thief's vehicle as she chased after him.

The 45-year-old from Hay Mills was in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital following the incident last Friday.

The thug pounced as the woman left AF Blakemore cash and carry in Saltley.

West Midlands Police said the thug ran from a white van and snatched the woman's handbag, which contained cash.

She chased after him as he fled back to the van parked in Arden Road.

Detectives said it was unclear whether the woman was struck by the van or whether she banged her head after falling as she held on to the vehicle.

The large white van is believed to have false registration plates KS06 WKY.

The offender and driver were described as white men, slim, in their 20s and 30s.

Police have carried out inquiries in Saltley and have also scoured footage form CCTV cameras in the area.

Today they appealed for witnesses to come forward.
