A BIRMINGHAM school's new kitchen has been opened by R&B star Jay Sean.

The singer performed for the young pupils of Somerville Primary School, in Small Heath.

The school, which has has 760 pupils, has just received a new £250,000 kitchen from Birmingham City Council.

The pupils asked teachers to invite the popular London-born singer, whose best known-hit is Ride It, to open the facilities.

Headteacher Richard Hornsby said: "There is such an excitement around the school.

"The meals are fantastic and you can actually see the difference in the way they work.

"In the past we relied on food coming into the school, which had been cooked elsewhere. It was not as good or perhaps as warm as it should have  been.

"The children wanted Jay Sean, who I was not personally too familiar with, to come and do the opening.

"Luckily, he was able to do it and I think some of the younger members of staff were just as excited by the visit as the children."

Mr Hornsby added: "I have been here nine years as headteacher and when I came I had three priorities, to make the playground safe so they did not have to get across the road, to replace the old huts with new buildings and to get the kitchen in.

"This was the last of the three and the pupils are really benefiting from the changes. We are all very pleased."
