Robots target MRSA

A MIDLAND hospital trust is to use robots costing £14,000 each in the war against superbugs.

The bug-busting Sterinis Robot is being called upon by the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust for use at its three hospitals.

The device produces a dry mist of hydrogen peroxide, which will eradicate pathogenic organisms, including MRSA and C. difficile, from the environment, even from hidden or inaccessible areas.

Having successfully trialled the robot on a ward at Sandwell General Hospital, the trust has bought six of them and is planning to buy another six. Officials said today it would take 16 used together to clean a single ward in two hours, but they were also very effective in cleaning side rooms, bays and even ambulances.

A hospital trust spokesman said: "The plan is to use them in conjunction with a deep clean. The beauty of the robot is that you don't have to take any furniture or equipment out of the room. In fact it's better if you leave it."

The robot discharges particles of electricallycharged dry mist which stick to anything, underneath beds and cupboards, even to curtains, and is effective in destroying MRSA, C Diff, e-coli, noro-virus, salmonella, listeria and many others.
