Jo Brand opens mental health centre

Jo Brand and Health Secretary Alan Johnson

A NEW £70 million mental health centre was opened in Birmingham by Health Secretary Alan Johnson and comedian Jo Brand, a former psychiatric nurse.

The 137-bed UK Centre for Mental Health, in Edgbaston, is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust said.

It provides single en-suite rooms, therapeutic activities and psychological treatments.

Mr Johnson said: “Not only is it offering the highest quality of care, it has also been developed in close partnership with staff, service users and the wider community.”

Trust chief executive Sue Turner said: “Our facilities offer an opportunity to reshape our services.”
