Birmingham's graffiti pensioners!

“Although we get money from Bournville Village Trust and the city council, the Lottery cash has enabled us to run lots of different projects,” she said.

Among those who have contributed to the mural are pensioner Kath Clements and 20-year-old Phil Trewartha, who both go to clubs run by the Shenley Green Community Centre.

Phil, from Bournville, said: “I’ve loved doing this street art project and it was great to meet some old people. Before I thought all old people were whingers and moaners, but now I know they’re alright and some are quite a laugh.”

Kath, aged 85, from Shenley, said: “I’d never done any spray painting before and really enjoyed it.

“It was good to meet the young people as normally I wouldn’t get a chance to mingle with them.” Lauren Laverne, who presents BBC2’s The Culture Show, said that last year the Lottery’s Good Causes handed out £235 million to community projects based in the Midlands.

“These are amazing projects that really positively impact on people’s lives,” she said.

“I love the fact that old and young people can get together and learn about each other’s lives through art.”
