Birmingham schools ‘hush up knife crime’

SCHOOLS in Birmingham are hushing up knife crime, potentially putting pupils at risk, it was claimed today.

At least one school in the city has expelled two pupils for knife offences without informing the police, a city councillor said.

Coun Lynda Clinton (Lab, Tyburn), said the school, which she did not name, recently excluded a 14-year-old girl with “anger problems” who was seen with a knife .

In a separate, earlier incident, it had excluded another teenager for holding a pair a scissors to another pupil’s throat.

Coun Clinton, a member of Birmingham’s Public Protection Committee said: “Some schools aren’t taking the issue of knife crime seriously.

“These are criminal incidents which, if they happened outside school, would have someone arrested and in court.

“I worry that the victims are still vulnerable when someone who threatened them is still walking the streets. Knives are too dangerous for schools to be taking these chances.”
