Sian Jones’ death: Inquest finds Heartlands Hospital staff negligent

Members of the jury also said staff had failed to talk to Sian about emotional problems she might be having because of her father suffering from leukaemia at the time. He later died.

The inquest jury, at Sutton Coldfield, heard evidence from Sian’s family that she had been accused of being a “drama queen” and suggestions that her pain had been as a result of emotional issues.

Heartlands Hospital chief executive Mark Goldman apologised to the family during the inquest and said Sian’s death should never have happened. He said the case had prompted a raft of changes in the way the hospital dealt with patients.

After the inquest Sian’s family released a statement describing her as a “well-loved daughter and friend”.

They said: “In the absence of a diagnosis, Sian’s pain was attributed to the effect of the minimally invasive operation some days previously and presumed emotional tensions.

“Although she was on a children’s ward nobody had considered discussing this possibility with Sian herself.

“The family are keen to ensure that the trust learn from their mistakes and they are relieved to learn of the changes which have been implemented within the trust as a result of their tragic findings.

“They are hopeful that the measures taken will save other families from similar devastation.

“The inquiry into Sian’s death and the lengthy inquest has been a painful and traumatic experience. They are now able to properly grieve the loss of Sian.”

Dr Goldman refused to comment after the inquest.
