Fly-tipping in Birmingham has cost £2m in two years

Birmingham City Council Environmental Crime Unit Manager Russell Thompson said: “We are clamping down on this more than ever before and tackling the problem with a combination of education and enforcement.

“We now have more enforcement staff and undertake an increasing number of stop and search operations with the police to check people have the right licences to carry waste.”

The city council is now part of a team made up of representatives from ENCAMS - the Government organisation which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, West Midlands Police, Sandwell, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Coventry and Walsall Councils that form the West Midlands Environmental Crime Liaison Group.

Doug Freakley from The Environment Agency said: “Fly-tipping is a crime that causes serious harm to the environment and blights communities.

“We want both businesses and members of the public to join us in the fight to put a stop to it by reporting it if they see it. We also want to make fly-tippers aware that their chances of getting caught are increasing.”
