Because of previous allegations of rape and sexual assault made against him by Yasmine, Ali was identified by police as a “person of interest” at an early stage and his identity was circulated as wanted for questioning.
After boarding a bus from Birmingham to Dover via London, Ali was caught at Dover Docks on the morning of September 16. He tried to flee by boarding a ferry but was caught as a result of the vigilance of customs officers.
Det Chief Insp Clews revealed that Ali could have escaped justice for his brutal crime had he managed to board.
“It would have been very difficult to catch him and full credit to staff and officers at Dover for doing that,” she said.
“Had he managed to board that ferry we would have struggled to catch him.”
Ali was charged with the double murder three days after being discovered in Dover.
And, yesterday, after Ali was finally convicted, Yasmine and Sabrina’s family were there to see justice done.
They sobbed and hugged each other as the jury announced its verdicts.
Afterwards, they said: “We are relieved that the monster who took away our girls’ lives in such a brutal and barbaric manner has today been found guilty of their murder.
“As parents and brothers of murdered Yasmine and Sabrina, sitting through this trial and having to watch and hear lies and denials from the defendant, who has failed to show any kind of remorse for the pain and suffering he has caused, has been incredibly difficult.”
