Clare Short: ‘Gordon Brown is a tragedy’
‘‘There’s not going to be one tomorrow, but the absolute maximum is June 2010 and I think New Labour will do very badly, probably not quite as badly as now.”
Ms Short also said she would consider running for Mayor of Birmingham should the current system of a council leader and cabinet be replaced by an elected mayor.
“Yes, I’m going to stay in Birmingham and if I could do something to serve the goodness of the city, I would like to,” she said.
“People keep asking me what I am going to do and people would say ‘go, on run as an independent’. I would think about it.”
Ms Short headed the Department for International Development for six years and resigned from the Government over the Iraq war in 2003, a move which she says she still stands by.
“I got lots of flak from all sides,” said the now-Independent MP. “I still know that I was sincerely trying to do my best and not calculating my self-interests, but it was a pretty miserable time.”
Ms Short accused Mr Blair of ruining his reputation over the war. “I think Tony has blighted his place in history. He lied,” she said.
‘‘If Britain hadn’t gone along with [United States President] George Bush, America might not have invaded. They might have taken longer, stuck with the international community.”
