MP attacks Edgbaston cricket ground floodlights
However, the city council would make the decision, he said. “I would hope the Conservative/Lib Dem-controlled council is going to insist that, before any finance is made available to WCCC, the club engages in meaningful and on-going discussions with community groups about how to minimise inconvenience caused by an increasing number of spectators attending functions and international matches and, most importantly, that the five floodlight pylons are retractable rather than permanent.”
Other cricket grounds were successful without permanent floodlights, he said.
“The home of cricket, as we know, is Lord’s and the England and Wales Cricket Board operates from there.
“Lord’s has now installed retractable floodlights which can rise to a height of 48 metres (157 feet) when fully erected and are then lowered to a height of 95 metres when not in use.”
He said Surrey Cricket Club’s ground, the Oval, also had retractable floodlights.
