They are invited to follow the lead of Jasper, Gabby, former Wolves legend Steve Bull and Albion’s Brendan Batson, who all feature in a short football film on the website alongside famous monuments such as Queen Victoria, the Iron Man, Matthew Boulton and the ‘Floozie in the Jacuzzi’.

By kicking a ball in their back garden, on a pitch, in a pub car park or on a school playground, and then filming it on a video camera or mobile phone, people can add their own football skills to the website.

Steve Town, Birmingham City Council’s Head of Sport, who is coordinating the 2018 bid, said: “We’ve had tremendous support from the management and players of all the city’s football teams as well as well-known faces who love football and who want to see Birmingham chosen by the FA as a host city for the 2018 World Cup.

“We hope the public will join them in pledging their support by visiting the official website and voting for Birmingham as well as joining the One Kick For Birmingham campaign. It doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you have two left feet or even four feet, everyone’s welcome to kick or head a ball in support of the bid.”

Sports presenter Gary Newbon, who features in the film, said: “Birmingham would be an ideal venue as they’re football mad here and the football clubs always get well supported.”

And local footballing legend, and now TV pundit, Andy Townsend, added: “I sincerely hope people can get behind Birmingham’s bid to be one of the focal cities of the 2018 World Cup. I think it deserves it. The stadiums are here, we’ve got all the infrastructure, we’ve got everything you could possibly need to be part of the 2018 bid.”

The FA will announce which 11 cities will be part of the official England 2018 bid by December.
