THE family of a Birmingham pensioner who died after being hit by a lorry have paid tribute to an “incredible lady” and “doting grandmother”.
Teresa Queenan was crossing at the junction of Alcester Road and Salisbury Road in Moseley when the tragic incident happened on November 9.
The 75-year old retired hospital worker, of Stratford Road, Hall Green, suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.
Daughter, Theresa Smith, said: “She was an incredible lady with a great character – a one-off. She was hard-working and loyal and never missed a day’s work as far as I remember.
“She was extremely independent and lived life to the full. She enjoyed a debate on any subject and she championed local good causes and worked as a volunteer in the Sue Ryder charity shops.”
Teresa was born in Dublin and moved to Highgate with parents Stephen and Mollie Comerford and her siblings when she was a small child.
She attended St Anne’s Catholic School and three years ago returned to the school with late sister Lilly to meet some of the children. Theresa said: “She had a lovely day with the children and she was presented with an original register.
“She was extremely proud of her school achievements. She often boasted that she was one of the only girls to have passed the 11-plus.”
After leaving school, Teresa had several jobs, before starting work at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
She started off as a domestic, became the first female porter before finishing her career 15 years later as senior telephonist. On her retirement at 60 she was given a long-service award.
Theresa added: “Our mother would be overwhelmed by the generosity and compassion shown by all the people present in Moseley village on the day of her tragic accident.
“My brothers Barry, Des, David and I and grandchildren Glenn, Matthew and Libby, who she idolised, would like to thank everyone for the floral tributes left at the scene. We will miss her so much.”
The funeral will take place on Thursday at St Anne’s Church in Bradford Street.
