PARAMORE play Emotional, or Emo, Music and there was plenty of emotion on display when singer Hayley Williams surveyed the huge crowd that had turned up to see the band at the NIA.
‘‘Wow, this is the biggest show we’ve ever played,’’ said the 20-year-old as she looked out at the 13,000 fans, making the gig a near sell out.
With her trademark red hair now dyed blonde Hayley is the Emo generation's pin-up and could be to today’s teens what Debbie Harry was to the kids of the seventies.
As she dances around the stage she can't help but be the centre of attention.
Musically, it’s pop-punk with angsty lyrics and the second song in, Ignorance, is the track from their latest album that Hayley wrote about her negative feelings for her bandmates when Paramore were on the verge of splitting up.
The 70 minute set is strong on material from the new album, Brand New Eyes, but the fans still seem to know every word of every track.
Some of the biggest cheers are reserved for I Caught Myself and Decode, as featured in the Twilight movies.
Other highlights include Emergency from debut, All We Know Is Falling, and CrushCrushCrush from its follow-up Riot!
And for the final song of the night, Brick By Boring Brick, the band are joined by selected members of the three support acts. That's what happens when you're pals with the headliners.
