A DRUGS gang which tried to flood Midland streets with £6 million worth of amphetamines and cannabis from Holland has been jailed for nearly 30 years.
The eight crooks were thwarted by the Serious Organised Crime Agency just as they were ready to ship two loads of their stash, by truck, into Britain. The gang included Birmingham dad-of-two Mark Adderley, who was previously jailed for his role in a ‘Super Dollars’ scam, which saw fake $100 bills distributed round the world.
The 52-year-old, from Court Oak Road, Harborne, got three years and nine months for his role in the drugs smuggling operation, at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday.
It also included a former deputy prison governor and a professional boxer.
The gang was led by Anthony Spencer, from Fivefield Road, Keresley, Coventry, who was jailed for five years and three months.
Detectives have revealed that 61-year-old Spencer has been in and out of prison for 40 years for drugs, firearms and theft offences.
Other members included former deputy prison governor Jogendranath Rajcoomar, of Synkere Close, Coventry, who got three years and nine months.
The 57-year-old had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import charges.
Judge Sean Morris told the court that he had acted as the “travel agent” for Spencer. He said he had paid for over 30 flights costing around £7,000 and had helped to manage the gang’s cash flow.
“It is quite obvious that you were completely embedded in this conspiracy and were trusted.
“You are a former deputy governor of the prison service so you have got first-hand experience of what drugs have done to this country and the harm it does to young people.”
His son Sunil Rajcoomar, 25, of no fixed abode, was jailed for two years. The court heard he had only played a sporadic part in what went on.
Former professional boxer Christopher Pollock, 37, of Parkview Close, Coventry, was jailed for three years.
Judge Morris said that Pollock’s role had been as a “grafter” and that he had bought and buried four safes to be used for the storage of drugs and possibly money.
Michael McGlinchey, 58, of Hen Lane, Coventry, was jailed for three years and two months.
John Mitchell, 40, of Greenhithe, Kent, was sentenced to four years and three months.
Judge Morris said Mitchell, who was found to have 1.7kg of amphetamine at his home, had played a “pivotal” role, helping to organise transportation.
Stephen Lismore, 41, of Grantham, Lincolnshire, was jailed for three years and two months.
