MORE devastating job losses are expected in Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country when the government announces massive spending cuts next month, the House of Commons has been told.
Chancellor George Osborne’s comprehensive spending review on October 22 could lead to many hundreds of redundancies, said Lorely Burt (Lib Dem, Solihull).
The MP, who supports the coalition government as the chairman of the Lib Dem Parliamentary Party, issued the warning in a heated Commons debate on the impact of the economic crisis on the region.
Birmingham MP Richard Burden (Lab, Northfield) also warned that plans to cut housing benefit by up to £520 a year would leave thousands of people in debt.
He said: “All this at a time when Birmingham City Council itself is proposing to cut around £7 million allocated by the previous government to tackle worklessness.
“And this at the same time as the council has issued proposals to cut back on the provision of community day nurseries for some of the most vulnerable people in our city.”
Spending cuts have already placed hundreds of jobs under threat as quangos are abolished.
