James Tierney, of Jervoise Road, Weoley Castle, died when his bike collided with a car a few streets away from his home at around 2pm on Saturday.

He was resuscitated by paramedics after suffering a heart attack at the crash site, but died a short time later at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital surrounded by his family.

His grief-stricken father James, aged 59, said his wife Carol, 51, and each of James’ nine siblings, were “heartbroken” and “numb” with shock.

Mr Tierney, a construction worker, said: “James was a very sociable, loving and caring person. He was liked by a lot of old people around here because he would help them.

“He was a good lad who liked a laugh and joke. He loved bikes and cars. He was bubbly and you couldn’t fault him.”

Mr Tierney was at home when he received a frantic call from one of his daughters telling him that James had been in an accident on the junction of Brinklow Road and Alwold Road.

The grandfather-of-15 said: “I ran down there. He wasn’t speaking and was just lying there.

“His helmet had come off in the impact. All the neighbours knew who he was and were there.

“We all then went to the hospital. We were all in the family room and they said they had to resuscitate him four or five times and they didn’t give him much hope. He lost the will to live.”

James, who was also known as Jim, leaves behind two brothers and seven sisters – Lee, aged 37, Scott, 27, Jackie, 32, Lisa, 28, Teresa, 25, Emma, 22, Danielle, 20, Michelle, 17, and Lauren, 16.
