THE staggering six-figure salaries of Birmingham City Council’s chief officers can be revealed in full for the first time today.
At the top of the pile is chief executive Stephen Hughes, who pocketed £233,000 in salary and pension contributions last year.
The massive pay packet prompted fury as thousands of low-paid local authority workers were told they would be made redundant following Government confirmation yesterday of the biggest public spending clampdown in decades.
Mr Hughes’s salary was described as “scandalous” by the regional secretary of public service union Unison, Roger McKenzie, pictured, who pointed out that the council had been in the forefront of persuading the Government to freeze local government pay for the next three years.
Under Government instructions the council has for the first time published full details of salary packages enjoyed by senior directors.
