THE lights will go on for a Birmingham rugby team tomorrow in a bid to raise cash for two military charities.
Bournville will play their first home match under floodlights when they take on Stratford in a Midlands One West fixture against Stratford at 7.30pm.
The game, at Birmingham University’s Bournbrook ground, will double as a fund-raiser for Help for Heroes and Troop Aid.
Bournville gave over the space normally taken by sponsors on their shirts to promote Help for Heroes, a services charity that has received significant support from the Rugby Football Union and rugby clubs across the country.
Proceeds from a collection will go to Help for Heroes and Bournville will donate 50 club polo shirts to Troop Aid.
It helps provide clothing and basic essentials for soldiers wounded on active service, many of whom are treated in Birmingham.
“It will be a great occasion tomorrow night, the lads are really looking to playing the game under the lights,” said Bournville’s director of rugby Rob Sigley.
“With a sizeable crowd also expected for the game, it will be a great opportunity to start our fundraising for Help for Heroes.
“We also have a significant number of brand new club polo shirts that we are giving away to the charity Troop Aid for the injured soldiers on their return to the University Hospital Birmingham again another very worthy cause.
“For the wider rugby community it will give people the opportunity to experience something different on a Friday night and show that rugby in the lower divisions is good and exciting.”
Bournville’s squad includes former Tonga international Hese Fakatou and former Moseley trio Carl Colvin, Tom McIntosh and Paul Coles.
