Birmingham man invents Dalek iPhone app

A BIRMINGHAM man is hoping for world domination with an iPhone app he has created which simulates the voice of Doctor Who’s fearsome daleks.

Dad-of-two Tom Fenn, from Balsall Heath, has made the iExterminate! software using a ring modulator – the original piece of sound kit behind the Doctor’s robotic enemy.

The photographer, who spent four months building it in his spare time, said he came up with the idea to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s because his 60-year-old brother-in-law John Caswell suffers from the disease.

At least ten per cent of end of year profits from sales of the 59p app will go to the UK Alzheimer’s Society.

So far more than 1,000 have sold, with most bought in Britain and America and some in Saudi Arabia.

As a boy Tom, now aged 43, would hide behind the sofa when the daleks appeared on screen.

“It used to give me nightmares,” he said.

It was while experimenting with a ring modulator that the radiophonic workshop composer Brian Hodgson created the classic dalek speech.
