Fifty West Midlanders on the 2011 New Year’s Honours list

FIFTY West Midlanders have been recognised for outstanding achievement and service in the 2011 New Year’s Honours list.

The region’s medics, sports heroes, charity workers and politicians received rewards for their dedication and talent.

Birmingham hospital consultant Professor Keith Porter, received a knighthood for his services to the armed services.

Professor Porter, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, is the UK’s only Professor of Clinical Traumatology.

The 61-year-old father of four has been at the forefront of developing pioneering treatment for injured personnel over the past decade.

He trained at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in the 1970s before being jointly appointed at the Birmingham Accident Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital in April 1986.

He said: “It is a great honour to be recognised in this way. I am privileged to be the civilian lead for a service that is highly-tuned and fully engaged in the care of injured soldiers.
