Sentence due in case of Sutton Coldfield woman strangled by wheelchair safety belt

Brigid O'Callaghan

A JUDGE is due to pass sentence today on a private health company which has pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to provide health and safety following the death of a 74 -year-old Birmingham grandmother.

Brigid O’Callaghan, also known as Vera, was found strangled by the safety belt of her wheelchair at the Bupa-run Amberley Court Nursing Home, in Edgbaston Road, Edgbaston, the morning after a Haloween party.

The grandmother, of Caversham Place, Sutton Coldfield, who had been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease since a road accident in 2003, had told staff she would put herself to bed.

Her daughter Ann had entrusted the healthcare giant to look after her mother while she had a week’s respite.

She had supplied written instructions about her care.
