Streets with Royal names sign up for Kate and William parties

Prince William and Kate Middleton

ROYAL Road in Sutton Coldfield and King Edwards Close in Perry Barr are planning to party to celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding next Friday.

The two roads are among the latest batch to have successfully applied to hold street parties in Birmingham to mark the Royal Wedding on April 29.

Following concerns raised by Prime Minister David Cameron that neighbours across Britain were being put off holding the traditional knees-ups due to council red tape, a further nine have won bids in the city.

These are in addition to 16 other streets who applied for permission for road closures to hold events previously, bringing the total number to 25, so far.

The new figure means Birmingham has overtaken Solihull, where there will be 23 street parties.

Lynne Hassell, organising the right regal knees-up in Royal Road, said up to 150 people would be joining in the party.

“It just seemed a bit more special having a street party because we are Royal Road,” said the 56-year-old mum of two.

“I’ll shed a tear watching the wedding. Kate Middleton will be a good addition to the Royal Family, she seems down to earth.”

The road had put its bid in before the first deadline at the end of last month. It took longer to process because organisers wanted to make sure enough people were interested.

Royal Road finally got the seal of approval, along with the nine others, in time for the new deadline of April 18.

Mrs Hassell, who has lived in the road for 30 years, added: “I’m hoping it will be a really good day. Everyone’s very enthusiastic. Some households are bringing ten, 12 people, it’s looking very promising.

“A few people in the road want to bring their children hoping it will be a day to remember.”

As well as afternoon tea, the revellers will enjoy egg and spoon racing, hook-a-duck and a royal quiz.
