A BIRMINGHAM family are back on coffee and cakes after following a gruelling poverty diet of £1 per person per day.

Mum Anna Burden, husband Sam and their three children joined the Live Below the Line campaign by spending just £5 each on their food and drink for five days.

The challenge, which was also taken up by Birmingham Mail reporter Matt Lloyd, is part of a national initiative to raise awareness of world poverty where 1.4 billion people live on £1 a day or less.

Hall Green-based Anna, who is acting regaional manager for Christian Aid, said: “What struck us was the fact that we couldn’t have what we wanted when we wanted it. That was hard but we were pleased with our self-control.”

"And we raised more than £450.”
