The annual event which marked the start of a year of fund-raising for new Lord Mayor Coun Anita Ward turned into a real washout.
Her five charities are the Tiny Babies Big Appeal, Royal British Legion, Irish Guards Appeal, Homes for the Brave and St Margaret’s Community Trust in Ward End.
Crowds of 20,000 had been expected, but organisers said numbers were significantly down because of the rain. At one time the event was held in Cannon Hill Park but has now moved and took place around the Council House with activities in Victoria, Chamberlain and Centenary Squares.
On the main stage in Victoria Square rock and pop bands performed and visitors could browse food and crafts stalls, meet the Grenadier Guards and see demonstrations by West Midlands Fire Service staff.
