Churchmen call for an end to the violence in West Midlands

MIDLAND clergymen demanded an end to the violence.

Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Bernard Longley, said he was “shocked and saddened”.

His plea came on the anniversary today of the death of Birmingham holy man John Henry Newman.

Archbishop Longley said: “I am shocked and greatly saddened by the destruction and looting in Birmingham’s city centre and in Handsworth.

“I ask the Catholic community to pray, especially for all those whose livelihood or property has been damaged.”

He added: “Blessed John Henry Newman cared for the poor and needy of Birmingham. As we recall the anniversary of his death today, we ask for his prayers for the people of Birmingham and all our citizens.”

The Bishop of Wolverhampton, the Right Reverend Clive Gregory, said clean-up operations were evidence that communities would “gain strength to build a better future”.

“We have seen communities coming together to repair and rebuild and to stand alongside those who have been victimised by violence,” he said.
