Birmingham student dresses pop diva Lady Gaga

A BIRMINGHAM fashion student had her first taste of styling the stars when pop diva Lady Gaga wore one of her dresses.

Rebecca Short could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the photographs of the eccentric singer in an outfit she had created for Graduate Fashion Week.

And with photographs of the press conference in Singapore seen across the globe, the 22 year-old is hoping it may lead to more commissions.

Rebecca’s neoprene dress was spotted on the catwalk at the student showcase in June.

“We all went to Graduate Fashion Week at the end of term and took our designs there,” said Rebecca, who has just finished a three-year BA in fashion design at Birmingham City University. “Lady Gaga’s stylist was there and she asked if she could borrow the dress.

“I wasn’t sure if it was genuine to begin with but she asked for a few outfits from students so the university arranged to send them. I knew she had a few designs so I didn’t expect to hear anything else.”

In July, Rebecca, who hails from near Sheffield, but lived in Perry Barr and Edgbaston as a student, was on a month-long trip of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize when she learned her dress had been chosen.

“I was getting all these messages from my friends telling me to look at Twitter as there was a picture on there,” she said. “It was all so surreal but there it was.

“The stylist had made it look amazing. It is a very minimalistic dress. I had focussed on shape and structure with experimental draping.

“I think she chose it because it was stripped quite bare so could be styled however you want. She had styled it completely differently from how I had done it.”

Rebecca, who has landed a job with designer fashion label Suzannah, has just received the dress back.

“It is sample size but they haven’t altered it at all,” she said. “I am a big fan of Lady Gaga’s style and thought she looked amazing in it.

“And the stylist has said to keep in touch and send her any future designs so I am hoping it may lead to other things.”
