HISTORY buffs have a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes at a 100 year old swimming pool, before redevelopment work gets under way.
Stirchley Baths, which opened in 1911, will be open to visitors for just one day on Saturday before work begins to restore the grade II listed building and convert it into a new community centre.
Councillors have decided to mark the 100th anniversary and start of a new chapter in the building’s life, with a public open day.
Coun Nigel Dawkins (Con, Bournville) explained that the derelict building had been deep cleaned by a contractor with all accumulated dirt, dusts and bird and rat droppings removed.
He said: “This deep cleaning has given us a perfect opportunity to allow residents a limited look inside the place before the major work begins.”
Residents will be allowed to view the main hall and will need to wear hard hats between 11am and 3pm.
He added: “It is probable that demand will be high and in some cases a considerable wait may be necessary. We are sure that you will not be disappointed and that the wait will be worth it.”
The plans to convert the building into a new Stirchley Community Centre will also be outlined and residents are invited to join a new Friends of Stirchley Baths group.
The redevelopment is being funded with community spin-off cash from new Tesco store being built nearby.
