Kingstanding bus driver sacked for bus crash in Newtown says he was being attacked at the time

A BUS driver sacked after he crashed his double decker has told how he had come under attack from thugs at the time.

Father-of-three Delroy Senior was dismissed just five days before Christmas last year having caused £60,000-worth of damage. He said he crashed the number 46 in Newtown while trying to escape violent youths in a lay-by in Perry Barr.

The Kingstanding 52-year-old, who lost his unfair dismissal case against National Express West Midlands last month, said he thought his “life was in danger” as the pair tried to force their way into the bus.

“I was scared for my life. I couldn’t see if they had a weapon,” he said.

“I think they were on drugs – they didn’t care about anything. They could have done anything to me.

“They were getting more and more violent and I had to get away. I just wanted to get out of there – it was hell.”

Fearing for his life, Mr Senior said he tried to drive off – all the time trying to hold down a button stopping one thug getting in through the passenger door while also clutching his window to stop the other forcing his way into the cab.

But the vehicle lurched forward and crashed into a stationary car which then hit two other vehicles. Two cars were written off in the incident and the attackers fled.
