IT is a Sunday evening and while many youngsters might be sitting in front of their computer games, two triplets Alicia and India Phillips-Bullock, along with their partners Laurence Morrison and Sam Cloke, are perfecting the cha cha.
The four young people have already spent the day in a competition but there is no let-up.
They practise nearly every day, travel the length and breadth of the country in search of lessons and competitions and spend a small fortune in the process.
All is driven by their love of dance – and their desire to be the best.
For Alicia and India the inspiration is clear as their parents Warren Bullock and Jane Phillips were international competitors and today run Wolverhampton-based Zig Zag School of Dance.
For the boys, ballroom was a less obvious choice. But one they don’t regret, despite the punishing schedule.
Alicia may be just 11 years old but she already has a number of prizes under her belt, having won British Juvenile Champion and UK Champion last year for both Latin and ballroom.
This, just five years after first putting on her high heels.
“I was about six when I started dancing, she says. “I started just going to classes once a week but then I started to want to do more.
“I like the dancing and I love the costumes. My favourite dance is the cha cha because it is so fast.”
For Alicia, who lives in Wolverhampton and attends Ounsdale High School in Wombourne, dancing is more than just a hobby.
“I practise at least five times a week and then there are competitions most weekends,” she says. “But you have to do that because everyone is practicing really hard. If you want to do well in the competitions then you need to practise a lot.”
Alicia’s partner since January is nine-year-old Sam, who lives in Solihull and attends Warwick School.
He was tempted onto the dance floor by his parents.
