Councillor called a t**t during heated meeting on historic Balsall Heath pool

A HEATED political debate over a historic Birmingham swimming pool descended into anarchy – with claims a leading city councillor was called a ‘t**t’.

The Hall Green constituency meeting became a chaotic affair as Labour and Liberal Democrat rivals squabbled over the future of the Moseley Road Baths in Balsall Heath.

The Grade II listed building has been closed for 15 months and residents are furious at delays and spiralling repair costs.

At one stage a Labour party campaigner was accused of calling the Cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture Martin Mullaney a ‘t**t’ as tempers flared.

Amid a cacophony of noise, Coun Mullaney’s colleague, Coun Paula Smith (Lib Dem, Hall Green) shouted: “The Labour candidate called Martin a t**t. Are you going to throw him out?”

The row was then cooled with a call to order from Labour chairman Coun Tony Kennedy.

Members of the Friends of Moseley Road Baths had packed into the Hall Green Library meeting room and were in no mood to hear of further delays.

The Labour led committee wants to hand responsibility for the baths, which require an estimated £20 million of long term investment, to the city council’s strategic centre.
