Antonio Boparan Singh car crash case the first to use black box evidence

THE case was the first in the UK to use evidence from a "black box" recorder, which helped estimate Boparan's speed at the time of impact and ultimately helped convict him of dangerous driving.

Prosecution barrister Simon Davis described the device, which was fitted to the airbag system of the Range Rover, as the automobile equivalent of a black box flight recorder, which is analysed after air crashes.

It found that a massive 42mph of force was lost in one fifth of a second in the crash.

It helped police investigators estimate his speed at around 72mph.

The court also heard that the Range Rover's front end was badly damaged and was pushed back, destroying the front of the vehicle and forcing it down into the ground, leaving gouges in the road.

The Edwards' vehicle was also pushed back 14m by the crash into an Audi that was behind, effectively sandwiching the Edwards' car between two vehicles.
