Driver dies in collision with prom party limo in Aldridge
A HEADTEACHER today spoke of a “tragic” end to his school’s Prom night after a limousine taking pupils home was involved in a fatal collision.
Two pupils from the Aldridge School suffered minor injuries and shock in the crash in Walsall Wood Road, Aldridge, early on Saturday morning.
The 20-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Golf died after his car collided with a Bentley Continental Flying Spur limousine containing the pupils, who on their way home from their Prom at nearby Calderfields Golf Club.
Parents and friends of the youngsters rushed to the scene of the crash, where residents said there had been other serious accidents.
Aldridge School head David Mountney said today: “Of course, it is a tragedy when anybody dies, and our hearts go out to the victim and his family at this terrible time.
“We are currently awaiting further news on the injured Aldridge School pupils, but fortunately all indications are that they are on the mend.
“It was a tragic end to what should have been a wonderful evening.”
Paramedics and firefighters battled in vain to revive the Golf driver.
Aldridge Fire Station Crew Commander Phil James said: “We got the man out onto the floor and started to work on him while we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
“The Bentley had front offside damage and the man’s black Golf had quite extensive damage.”
