Swine flu: Walsall man dies in hospital
Dr Rashmi Shukla, regional director of public health, added that as of the end of last week, 80 people had been hospitalised, with only eight of those needing the most critical care.
She said hospitals and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) were now reporting swine flu as having a low to medium effect on services but there was still a “significant demand” on PCTs with 150 courses of Tamiflu being dispensed every day.
Meanwhile, Government health experts estimate that as many as 65,000 people in the UK could die of the illness this winter.
Sir Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer for England, said this week that figures being used by the NHS to plan its services show that a 30 per cent infection rate among the population could lead to the deaths.
