Bilston nightclub shooting: Victim named
THE man who died after being shot in a Black Country nightclub at the weekend was Danny McCalla.
Mr McCalla, aged 50, was gunned down in the early hours of Saturday morning in Bilston High Street’s Tropical Harmony Nightclub.
Police said the victim, from Dudley, was also known as Dannyman. Another man who was injured was today said to be recovering well in hospital. He received some sort of blow, rather than a shotgun wound.
It was the second shooting at the venue in 14 months. Three people were shot outside the club in September 2008.
It has also emerged that the club could be stripped of its license today with an emergency review hearing at Wolverhampton Council.
A murder investigation – Operation Bluepathway – was immediately launched following the latest shooting, under the lead of Senior Investigating Officer Det Chief Insp Rich Baker, with detectives from the Major Investigation Unit and local CID.
Forensic Scene Investigators and police officers were at the scene all weekend.
Three Black Country men were arrested the following day. One man, aged 29, was arrested on suspicion of murder and today remained in police custody.
One man, aged 36, was arrested on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender. He has been bailed pending further investigation.
The third man, aged 34, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to wound and perverting the course of justice. He has also been bailed pending further investigation.
In September last year, the club’s owner, Derrick Chambers, aged 46, was shot in the neck, but later released from hospital along with two door staff at the club – a man aged 44 and a woman aged 25.
Coun John Davis, chairman of the licensing committee at Wolverhampton Council, confirmed an emergency meeting would be called this afternoon to review the club’s licence after a request from the police.
Witnesses should phone West Midlands Police on 0845 113 5000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
