Teenagers across the West Midlands have proved they are a class act within another successful year for GCSE and A-levels.
The class of 2011 post some of the Midlands’ best results, with just under six in 10 Birmingham youngsters achieving the benchmark five or more GCSEs including maths and English.
Schools also posted some of their best A-level results yet – with Birmingham independent schools, including King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys and King Edward VI High School for Girls, leading the charge for top-scoring students.
Birmingham City Council education chief Coun Les Lawrence said of the GCSE results: “What we are seeing in Birmingham is a steady rise in educational attainment.
“Not only has there been another good increase in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades, there has also been an improvement in those achieving these grades in English and maths.
“In addition to this, there has been an improvement in the percentage of pupils making expected progress in English and maths.
“These results reflect the continued commitment of schools and the local authority to ensuring the best possible outcomes for all our young people.
“I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of teachers and other school staff, parents and pupils who have contributed to this success story.”
One of the city’s biggest success stories in 2011 was St Alban’s Academy in Highgate, which doubled its GCSE results in just two years. An impressive 68 per cent of students achieved five or more A* to Cs, including maths and English, in last summer’s exam results.
This was compared to just 31 per cent in 2009.
The inner-city school, once threatened with closure, has since been judged “outstanding” by both Ofsted and Church of England inspectors, and has even won praise from Prime Minister David Cameron.
Principal David Gould put his students’ success down to a back-to-basics approach.
Other city schools celebrating successes included Perry Beeches in Great Barr, which saw 73 per cent of students achieve five or more GCSEs, including maths and English, and eight out of 10 GCSE students at Bishop Challenor Catholic College in Kings Heath getting the benchmark grades.
Schools in the King Edward VI Foundation also lived up to their reputations, with four scoring 100 per cent in their GCSE results.
In Solihull, Arden comprehensive saw 91 per cent of pupils score five or more A* to C grades including maths and English, with 100 per cent of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades overall.
