KIND-hearted pensioner George Carter has been hailed a hero after devoting more than 30 years to busting crime in his neighbourhood.
The 80-year-old great grandfather, from Alum Rock, has worked tirelessly as a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, making life difficult for burglars in Washwood Heath, Ward End and Alum Rock.
Through fundraising activities and grants, he and the Alum Rock Neighbourhood Watch Association have also bought and fitted security devices such as window locks, door chains and alarms in the homes of more than 700 vulnerable residents since they began the scheme in the 1980s.
This year, the former British Rail electrician has also supported 14 crime prevention events in Birmingham where he’s shared his wealth of experience and his top tips for home security.
George, who has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, said: “I love the work I am able to do in my community and seeing what a difference it can make to peoples’ lives.
“I speak to the local police officers regularly and they have become my friends.
