Top Tips: Residents urged to shut that door

HOUSEHOLDERS have been urged to lock up their homes whenever they are out and stop leaving an open invitation to burglars.

The warning cames after a spate of break-ins in the Midlands where thieves managed to sneak in though a door or window left unlocked.

In one burglary, thieves entered a Solihull home through an open window and took a defibrillator and an antique revolver.

Crime analysts have worked out that in almost a third of burglaries in the West Midlands thieves gain access through an open window or door.

Police also reminded householders that insurance companies may not pay out if a burglary happens in a house where windows and doors are not left secure.

Chief Insp Kevin Doyle said: “Leaving a window or door open to your home is like leaving an invitation for a burglar to visit.

“Spending a minute to check your windows and doors are closed and locked could make all the difference between a happy return journey and a call to us.”

West Midlands Police issued a six-point plan to help beat burglars:

* Secure doors and windows.

* If out late, leave a light on.

* Use timer switches on electric items to make it look like you are in.

* Always use your burglar alarm.

* Never leave a spare key under the doormat – a burglar will look there.

* Secure sheds and garages.
